Awatere River

Awatere River create a range of premium quality wines from our small appellation in the world-famous wine-growing region - the Awatere Valley of Marlborough, New Zealand.

Carved out by ancient glaciers long ago, the valley surrounding the Awatere River is rich in alluvial deposits. These remnants of the ice age give our wines a minerality and flintiness which, coupled with the crisp, pure water flowing down the Awatere (‘swift river’ in Maori) from Mount Tapuae-o-uenuku, create a unique expression of the land. The river is the lifeblood of the valley, and we have named our premium wine range in its honour.

The Awatere Valley, situated further south and closer to the coast than most of Marlborough, is known for its rugged, cool, and wind-swept environment. This unique climate leads to slower ripening, lower yields, and higher natural acidity, resulting in wines with intense aromatics, vibrant tension, and distinct Awatere character.
